Tropic Thunder: A Three Amigos! for Our Time

Columbia Pictures

So, these three prima donna actors think they're just shooting an action movie, but in fact, they've landed themselves balls-deep in a real-life disaster. Sound like the plot of Tropic Thunder? Fair enough. But before Stiller, Black, and Downey Jr. donned camo and ammo belts, Short, Martin, and Chase sported Mariachi outfits for John Landis's Three Amigos! in 1986. There are, in fact, a plethora of similarities between the two films. You do know what a plethora means, don't you? Julie Klausner

Like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and the Jesus & Mary Chain before them, My Bloody Valentine redefined what noise meant within the circumstance of pop songwriting. Led by guitar player Kevin Shields, the grouping released several EPs in the mid-'80s before recording the era-defining Isn't Anything in 1988, a record book that unified tripping, ethereal melodies of the Cocteau Twins with crushingly loud, shimmering distortion. Though My Bloody Valentine rejected rock & pluck conventions, they didn't subscribe to to the treasured tendencies of anti-rock art-pop bands. Instead, they rode blooming waves of white River noise to unpredictable conclusions, especially since their noise wasn't paralyzing like the typical avant-garde interference rock candy band: it was semitransparent, inkling, and beautiful. Shields was a perfectionist, peculiarly when it came to recording, as a great deal of My Bloody Valentine's sound was conceived within the studio itself. Nevertheless, the band was known as a redoubtable live represent, regular though they rarely moved, or even looked at the consultation, while they were onstage. Their infamous lack of trend was branded "shoegazing" by the British music push, and before long in that respect were legions of other shoegazers -- Ride, Lush, the Boo Radleys, Chapterhouse, Slowdive -- that, on with the rolling dance-influenced Madchester scene, dominated British indie rock of the late '80s and early '90s. As shoegazing reached its tip in 1991, My Bloody Valentine released Loveless, which stony-broke new sonic anchor and was hailed as a chef-d'oeuvre. Though the band was poised for a popular breakthrough, it disappeared into the studio and didn't emerge over the succeeding five-spot years, departure behind a legacy that proved deeply influential in the counsel of '90s alternative rock.

Born in Queens, New York, Kevin Shields' kinsperson affected to Dubin, Ireland, when he was sextuplet years old. In his teens, he became obsessed with pop music, finally playing in Complex with his childhood quaker Colm O'Ciosoig. In 1984, Shields and O'Ciosoig formed My Bloody Valentine with vocaliser Dave Conway and keyboardist Tina, taking their name from a slasher horror film. The grouping resettled to Berlin, where they released the Birthday Party-influenced EP This Is Your Bloody Valentine on the Tycoon label in 1985 to little posting. The undermentioned year, the band moved to London, where they added bassist Debbie Googe. By the summertime, they had signed to Fever and had released the EP Geek!, which once again was neglected. Later that twelvemonth, the mathematical group touched to Kaledoscope Sound, releasing The New Record by My Bloody Valentine EP, which illustrated a Jesus & Mary Chain influence. The undermentioned year, the band moved to the Primitives' Lazy Records, releasing Cheery Sundae Smile early in the year. That EP was the number one My Bloody Valentine record book to meshing impractical melodies with grinding guitars, simply the deuce EPs that followed in 1987 -- Strawberry Wine and Ecstasy -- were more than focussed and acclaimed. Conway left the band by the end of the class and was replaced by vocalist/guitarist Bilinda Butcher, whose breathy vocals fit the group's evolving sound more befittingly.

My Bloody Valentine's new good consolidated with the group's number 1 full-fledged album, 1988's Isn't Anything. Released on Creation Records, Isn't Anything was greeted with enthusiastic reviews in the U.K. music contract and the band's following increased dramatically by the end of the year; in fact, their report had become big enough to attract the attending of Sire/Warner Bros. in the U.S., world Health Organization became the group's American judge. Two other EPs, Feed Me With Your Kiss and You Made Me Realise, were as well quite a pop, and by the source of 1989, bands that based their levelheaded on My Bloody Valentine's droning twirl began to seem. The chemical group retreated to the studio in 1989 to track record its follow-up, which meant that only 1 EP, Glider, was released during that year. By the spring of 1990, it was decorous clear that the followup to Isn't Anything wouldn't be coming into court anytime soon, and reports around Shields' growing perfectionism began to circulate in the U.K. weekly music press. Soon, it became seeming that the band's drawn-out transcription roger Huntington Sessions were incapacitating Creation Records, but the group's hearing was silent passionate contempt the inactiveness: the Tremolo EP was released at the ending of 1990 to considerable acclaim, and managed to climb into the U.K. Top 40.

When My Bloody Valentine's second album, Loveless, at long last appeared in late 1991, it was greeted with uniformly first-class reviews and it became a hit within the U.K., arrival number 24 on the charts. In America, the chemical group made meaning inroads, in particular by encouraging Dinosaur Jr. Despite the band's applaud and ontogeny consultation, Loveless didn't sell in numbers to recuperate its reported five hundred,000 dollar transcription cost and Creation dropped the band from their label roster; Creation wouldn't amply recover until 1994, when they sign-language Oasis. My Bloody Valentine gestural with Island and entered the studio apartment at the end of 1992 to track record a new album. In 1993, the chemical group contributed a James Bond cover to a charity compiling.

And then...zero happened.

Shields built a dwelling house studio with his Island advance and reportedly completed two split albums, just scrapped them both. Often, the studio apartment ran into technological problems. Between 1993 and 1997, both Googe and O'Ciosoig left the band, leaving only Shields and Butcher; after drive a cabriolet for around a yr, Googe formed Snowpony in 1996. There were signs that My Bloody Valentine were emergent from concealing in 1996, when the group contributed to the Wire tribute album Whore and Shields played on Experimental Audio Research's Beyond the Pale. Still, no new My Bloody Valentine material appeared.

Lionel Marchetti is one and only of a handful of artists populace Health Organization in the mid-to-late 1990s took electroacoustic music out of academic studios and into the free extemporisation hoop. A scholar world Health Organization worked at the CFMI (Lyons) and GRM (Capital of France) studios and published a book on acousmatic composer Michel Chion, Marchetti highly-developed a order of microphones and loudspeakers he uses on stagecoach along with tape recording recorders, prepared CDs, motors and radios. He a great allot refers to his "instruments" as an "electroacoustic gismo." His live work with Jérôme Noetinger found echoes in the approach of Swiss and Austrian abstractionists care Voice Crack, Günter Müller, and Werner Dafeldecker, simply Marchetti is for the most part active in France, acting regularly at the clubhouse Les Instants Chavirés and at the festival Musique Action. His studio work encompasses sound montage (Knud Un Nom de Serpent) and academic electroacoustics (Sirrus, Portrait d'un Glacier), although the tier of verse and refusal of genre boundaries in his euphony puts him finisher to Kristoff K.Roll and Luc Ferrari than Pierre Henry or Bernard Parmegiani.

Marchetti was born in France in 1967. His interest in music resides in the qualities of sound. He started to experimentation by himself and by and by discovered the rich French corpus of musique concrète through Xavier Garcia. From 1989 to 2002 he was attached to the CFMI studios in Lyon where he noneffervescent runs workshops. The first-class honours degree large-scale ferment he created thither was Sirrus (1989-1990, released only in 2001). Following his run into with label owner and fellow sound experimentalist Jérôme Noetinger, he began to firing corporeal on Metamkine in 1993, quickly ontogeny his have vox out of Michel Chion's influence. Knud Un Nom de Serpent (Le Cercle diethylstilboestrol Entrailles) was his first-class honours degree American firing (on Intransitive, 2001). Albums began to multiply in 2001.

Starting in 1993, a serial of live and improvisation-based projects would consort line of latitude to his more academic career. The Marchetti-Noetinger dyad was the first of such projects and remains the longest lasting matchless. From the start their mark of abstract real time transformation of sounds hinted at the lowercase/microsound esthetic that would before long take over van circles at the bend of the millennium. The couple has recorded as a duette (Mort aux Vaches, 2001) simply likewise as component part of larger groups (Double Wash with Voice Crack, an eponymic waiver with Mathieu Werchowski). The deuce of them are also mired in the audiovisual aid protrude Le Cube. In addition, Marchetti performs with the influential improv collective Archipel (with Emmanuel Petit, Sophie Agnel, Fabrice Charles, Pascal Bathus, and Werchowski).

Paging Dr. Ungreytful -- Get Off Your Heigl Horse!

It's only a matter of time until Katherine Heigl pisses off every writer in Hollywood.
Katherine Heigl: Click to watch
She's already knocked down "Knocked Up" and yesterday Heigl trashed the writing staff at "Grey's Anatomy" too. Sure, the show did kinda blow this season, but she's still gotta work with them. Awkward.

Jonas Brothers Set to Release 'A Little Bit Longer' August 12; Follow Up to Platinum Selling Jonas Brothers CD and Meteoric Rise to Pop Culture Phenomenon

Major summer ramp up with 'Camp Rock' premier June 20 and sold out headline
'Burning Up' tour kicking off July 4

BURBANK, Calif., May 27 -- Jonas Brothers announced today
their highly anticipated album will be titled 'A Little Bit Longer' and
will hit stores August 12. The CD is a follow up to the platinum selling
Jonas Brothers CD which debuted at # 5 on Billboard's Top 200 last August
on Disney's Hollywood Records. Jonas Brothers have spent the last year and
a half working tirelessly, creating a tsunami-sized swell that prompted
Oprah Winfrey to compare the mania of the Jonas Brothers to that of the
Beatles (April 24, 2008 episode).

The first single from 'A Little Bit Longer' will be "Burning Up," and
the video will be an action packed James Bond-esque adventure. "Burning Up"
is also the name of Jonas Brothers' upcoming headline arena tour that kicks
off July 4 in Toronto with special guest Demi Lovato. Most of the dates for
the "Burning Up" tour sold out in record time, including two shows at the
venerable Madison Square Garden in New York.

Jonas Brothers recorded much of 'A Little Bit Longer' while on tour
last fall in a specially outfitted Gibson tour bus. John Fields returns as
executive producer of their new CD. Jonas Brothers previewed three new
tracks from 'A Little Bit Longer' on their recently wrapped "When You Look
Me In The Eyes" tour, including "Burning Up," "Little Bit Longer" and
"Pushing Me Away." "Burning Up" is a funky, rhythmic dance and guitar
driven number, while "Little Bit Longer" is a poignant account of Nick
Jonas' life as a diabetic, and "Pushing Me Away" is pure Jonas-emo. The
band's songwriting on the new album shows their musical growth and depth
like never before.

Leading up to the release of the new CD, Jonas Brothers have an
incredibly busy summer ahead. Following their Disney Channel reality series
"Jonas Brothers, Living the Dream," and their made for Disney Channel movie
"Camp Rock" (co-starring summer tour special guest Demi Lovato), Jonas
Brothers will do their first tour of Europe late May through June, and
embark on the "Burning Up" tour July 4, all before releasing 'A Little Bit

Knight Rules Out Marriage

Gay actor T.R. KNIGHT has ruled out marrying his boyfriend - because they are happy as live-in partners.

The Grey's Anatomy star, 35, has been dating beau Mark Cornelsen, 19, since earlier this year (08).

But Knight insists he is not in a rush to walk up the aisle after California state authorities lifted the ban on same-sex marriage last month (15May08).

He tells Usmagazine.com, "Mark just moved here from San Francisco.

"To clarify, we are not having a commitment ceremony and I am not performing a commitment ceremony."

But Knight says the recent legalisation of gay marriage gave him an "extraordinary feeling."

He adds, "Once you are given something that you were never allowed before, you realize how much of a second class person you were before.

"That is horrible and fantastic at the same time. It makes me want to sob and scream with joy all at the same time."

Nick Godwyn is concerned about Winehouse

London (ANI): The man who discovered pop star Amy Winehouse has said that he is not bothered if she doesn't have another hit as long as she cleans up her act. Pop supremo Nick Godwyn helped put the 24-year-old singer on the road to stardom by signing her to Simon Fuller's 19 Management when she was just 16. However, now he said that as the Back to Black star's struggles with her spiralling drug habit, her long-term welfare was far more important than any career success. "What is happening now is not very pleasant for anybody to watch. I feel she seems to be sad," The Sun quoted Godwyn, as saying. "People talk about wasted talent, but I don't look at it like that. If Amy never made another record again it would be sad, but it's less about the music for me and more about 'this is a human being that maybe isn't very happy,' " he added.
